Hi! I'm an Army brat...my dad was prior service Marine Corps, though, and still has the tattoo on his lower arm that says USMC...he got a lot of flack for that in the Army...;D I grew up in California, Georgia, Hawaii, Washington State and Germany...hten I enlisted in the Navy and did my tour of duty in California, and stayed in Cali until two months ago when I moved out to Kansas City...

Well, all I know, as someone who is 4th generation military and have seen both the Army and the Navy, I can honestly say that I believe the Army takes way better care of it's troops...I didn't hate the Navy, I learned a lot, worked hard, and grew up...but it was definetely differant...yeah, the Army has a differant MO, maybe has dirtier work (no dirtier than the marines, tho'!), but I think maybe that's why the camraderie was better, and the officer's treated their enlisted men WAY better...I always felt the Navy officers felt they were just so much better than the enlistees, and it showed in the way they treated us...but it's just a personal opinion. My grandfather was retired Navy, my great grand-father an Army vet...we went Army-Navy-Army-Navy...

yeah, our family is similar. my great grandfather was navy, my grandpa marine (fought in WWII), and my dad marine (Vietnam). i think i feel more of a loyalty to the marines and navy because of my family and the fact that the navy took care of me growin up (naval hospitals). plus i love the ocean. that sucks that the officers were crappy to you. i think the officers can learn a lot from the enlisted. after all, they've been in the game much longer. i think that could probably have less to do with the navy and more to do with the character of the officers themselves. they probably thought cause they went to college, they know everything.

anyways, i was also kinda curious about how women are treated in the Navy. is there a good chance for women to move up in the navy? i wanna go for a public affairs officer or intelligence officer. i've heard that the air force is best for women, but then you know how it is about feeling a preference for another branch.

Well, I was so gung ho to join the Navy, I understand...Navy officers are TAUGHT to be 'better' than enlisted men/women...that's why an ensign has a better room than the master chief, which isn't right, but whatever...as far as upward mobility, sure, there's lots of room. And on the plus side, I never once felt like I was sexually harrassed or had problems on my ship...I love the ocean, too...I was stationed on board the USS Samuel Gompers, and that cured me off boats for life...;D I don't think I will ever EVER take a cruise anywhere...j/k...the work was super hard, but I prefferred the ship to shore duty...got to travel more...

              that sounds cool.
i still may join the air force. i have a friend in the air force now and he loves it. he says they are better to their ppl than navy too. who knows? we'll see what happens.

i'm sure the Navy experience gave u alot of character. There are alot of reasons the mil appeals to me, but a major one is it helps you to be a better person.

I definetely grew, that's for sure...and honestly, there have been several situations that have arisen, post military, that to the average person would have been really stressful and hard to deal with...but I always managed to keep a cool head (panic later, in a safe place!), and stay really calm until the situation blows over...my dad insists it's the military training...I don't regret it, that's for sure, although I am very glad it's over...

Much of my childhood was spent as a Marine Corps brat. Some of the duty stations included Camp Lejune, NC; Yuma, AZ; Iwakuni, Japan and Quantico, VA. Since my father was in public affairs we had some other odd stops along the way. We lived in Syracuse, NY when he was earning a degree in photo-journalism. New Orleans was another stop (he was stationed in the USMC detachment office at Dauphine Street).

My father's best deployment was in New York City at the Armed Forces public affairs office at 59th Street in Manhattan. That made it more feasible for me to attend art school in New York.

I'm in my mid 30's now; I finished my BFA degree in 1991. It has been quite some time since I lived aboard a Marine Corps base. But I remember my high school days in Quantico like they were yesterday. If your friend is closer to my age there is a chance we might have crossed paths at some time or another. I have met and re-met some friends as I grew up bouncing from one base to the next.

We were in Schofield for awhile, in Hawaii...my dad was born at Tripler before HI was a state! I've run across several people from growing up a Brat, but the oddest experience happened just a few months ago. I still have my Nurnberg High letterman's jacket, and on occasion, when weather is esp foul, I'll wear it--it's WARM--anyway, I was walking to work in Concord, Ca, and a car started honking at me...I was a little nervous and kept walking...then someone shouted, "Hey! Hey, Nurnberg Eagle!!!" The car pulled along side me, and a man leaned out to tell me he was a Nurnberg Grad, class of '89...about two weeks later, again walking to work, I passed a diner when a much older man ran out, shouting, "Hey, NAHS!" He was Nurnberg Class of '74 or something...Concord is not really near any military base, except for an air force base an hour or so away...it just goes to show what a small world the military really is...

Wow, Yuma, Iwakuni, and Quantico -- me too! My dad was an A-4 pilot in the Marines. I was just back in Yuma last year (my sister lives in San Diego and we drove down to check it out) and was surprised to find it hasn't really changed at all since 1985, when I last saw it. Except, of course, everything seemed smaller since I was so much bigger (I was in the fifth grade when we moved from there to Iwakuni). Oh, and there was a lot less desert and a lot more housing developments.
