    Hi there!
I was USMC Brat from birth to '71. There was a lot less 'support network' for military families then. Navy Relief was the extent of it, really.
I lived at Norfolk Navy Yards, Kaneohe NAS, Off-base near MCRD, San Diego, on-base at Quantico MCS, Camp Pendleton, and Fallbrook NWS.
After that, I really wanted to settle down so deeked across the Canadian border and have lived in beautiful British Columbia ever since.
Would be a gas to meet folk I knew in school thru those years.

i'm a USMC brat myself! my dad retired from the marines about 4 years ago (he was a pilot -- flew A-4s) and is now teaching junior high school science, which he says is a lot harder than being an officer, because when the kids act like jerks, he can't just throw them in the brig for a few weeks. heh.

here's where i've lived, in order from birth to my dad's retirement:

      beaufort, sc
portland, or (while dad was in vietnam)
      beeville, tx (rats! and cockroaches!)
      quantico, va (worms! and snow!)
      yuma, az
iwakuni, japan (dad was there 2 years, we came for the 2nd one)
newport, ri (naval war college -- my dad was an instructor there on two separate occasions)
      doylestown, pa (nas willow grove)
alexandria, va (when dad was at the pentagon, which he hated!)

after doylestown, i went to college while my parents went to alexandria. after va, they went back to rhode island for another two years, and when my dad was passed over for general, he decided to retire.

how fun to find some other military brats! i'm sure we have a lot of stories in common!

Welcome to the small, yet perhaps slowly growing, group! Where was your favorite place to live? ...and your least favorite place was?

        Have you lived overseas?

        Take Care,
        Dyan

          Hi Dyan and all,

I was a Navy brat and am married to an Air Force brat. My dad was stationed in Taipei, Taiwan, Port Hueneme, CA, Pearl Harbor and environs, and retired at NAS Lemoore, CA. I was born overseas but was too young to remember anything.

My favorite place was Hawaii, least would be Lemoore. Yet I still live here in the Central Valley.

Oh my, another person that knows the HELL of Lemoore. Lemoore was my first impression of the States. I was born & raised for 10 years in Yokosuka Naval Base before I ever stepped foot in the U.S. It was quite a SHOCK. I think my mom & I cried there for 4 years. Fortunately, my dad was restationed back to Yokosuka, so I ended up finishing high school there before coming to Seattle for college.

I know Meg through another bulletin board, but nice meet the rest of you!

Yes, and still living through the hellish summers and ugly foggy winters [though the fog hasn't been too bad this year].

So when were you in Lemoore? I went to Neutra in something like '76-'77.

              Nice meeting you, too!

A little later '83 - '87. Most of that was spent at Akers Jr. high, although I did go to Neutra for about half a year.

Yes, there's only two seasons there. 100+F summer and foggy winter. I do believe that I need four seasons to function properly.

Wow, Meg, we have three duty stations in common! I lived in Yuma when I was in the 2nd and 3rd grades. We moved to Iwakuni, Japan after that and stayed there for three years. My father was in public affairs and did DJ and news anchor duties on Far East Network. I lived in Quantico for my last three years of high school.

Very cool! What years were you in Yuma? I was there 1980-1985 (first through fifth grade). Did you go to Rolle? I was just back there about 4 months ago -- first time I'd been back to Yuma since 1985! Still looks exactly the same, except the deserts have all been turned into housing.

Rocky's Pizza still stands!! But boy, Rolle sure looks a lot smaller now that I'm a grown-up.

I lived in Yuma during the mid to late 1970's, attending elementary school at C.W. McGraw Elementary. I haven't been back to Yuma since, but understand it is quite a bit larger now than it was 20-some-odd years ago.

I'm a USAF brat. I was born on an airforce base in California and have lived in South Dakota, Texas, England and Iceland. He retired in Louisiana because my mother is from there and then they divorced.

I am also an Air Force brat. I am the daughter of 2 Air Force brats (does the brattiness concentrate when it goes down the generations?). I don't know if my dad is sad that none of us ended up in the military.

I was born in Arizona, and lived in Lakenheath England, Limestone Maine, Wichita Falls Texas, O'Fallon Illinois, and San Antonio Texas.

My mom still tells a story of when she was talking to the colonel's wife and commented on being an air force brat. The colonel's wife looked at her and said "My dear, they are called fledglings." My mother just smirked at her and replied "No, we were definately *brats*."

Born and raised in the USMC. My father retired E9 in '82 after 26 years of service including three tours of Vietnam. While stationed in Burmuda he received orders to escort then Lt. Mallette to the Marine Corps Ball. The rest, they say, is history. I was their sole byproduct. I come from a long line of military men and women including www.frankknox.harvard.edu/who.html but, I am also the first in four generations NOT to be a career soldier.
Born in Camp LeJeune, NC. Stationed in Quantico, Norfolk, Cherry Pt., El Toro, and Lowery AFB, CO.
