Join up!!!

Hello there. I am looking forward to meeting any of the military brats on this site. I am also looking forward to meeting any 'civilian brats' who are interested in sharing their experiences too.

My name is Dyan. I am the daughter of a retired Col. in the Army. I appreciate being able to see the sights of the world, however I do miss having a 'hometown'. What are you feelings on this subject?

i was just the opposite, actually. i LOVED moving around all the time and now that i've been in the same place for over 10 years, i'm SO ANTSY! i've never lived anywhere this long! but i'm married to a civilian who really never left his home state -- it's weird to HIM to move around a lot! so, i'm having to learn how to put down roots and still be happy. so far, i cope by rearranging my furniture every two years! :)

my sister and brother were more like you -- they enjoyed getting to see different places, but it was really hard every time they had to leave friends and start over.

i sometimes regret not marrying into the military myself, actually. i miss the life a lot.

i'm the daughter of a retired col. in the usmc. ooh rah! :)

Hi, Dyan. I'm trishah, daughter of retired Army Maj. As I said in another post, Daddy Lifer retired when I was only 13 but I truly enjoyed the moving around and the new experiences. It could be because my parents, especially mom, treated it as an adventure, not only with travel around each assignment but experiencing the culture via food, celebrations, people, etc., too.

Since I was so young when he retired, I did manage to live for a long time in one locale. I recall running into folks I'd known long ago and thinking, "Gee, this is a new experience"!

So perhaps it's a trade-off. While worldly in some ways, Military Brats are interestingly naive because their world is so safe and protected. It's a true oxymoron.

Because we move, we're not overly good at knowing how to maintain long term relationships. I know I had to work on that.

I've seen Brats who are either extremely good at making new friends or terribly bad at it, drawing into a shell. Luckily, I'm the former and I think all my siblings are, too, save one.

I think we're a little more apt to feel comfortable trying new things - foods, for example.

I could well be wrong, too. Maybe the tendencies I'm chalking up to the Brat way of life are really just reflections of individual parenting skills and styles. Who knows.

Personally, given the choice, I would do it the Brat way again.

Hi. I really loved being based in Germany when I was little. Seeing new going to new placing really sparked my interest in traveling. It is really hard to stay in one place now. I get tired of seeing the same old things over and over. I want to see more of the world. Traveling around makes me sane. I feel that traveling is important for everyone to do.

I only problem that I had in the military was making friends. It was not that I was bad at meeting people. I was just afriad of having a really friend and never seeing them again.

I loved moving around, and I'm finding that a lot of brats did (contrary to the myth that all brats are displaced malcontents...I get that all the time...Oh, you poor dear!!! You have no roots...how very sad...)
Yeah, it was SO sad that I spent my childhood in Hawaii (where I learned to swim in the ocean and spent every wknd at the beach) and Washington State (where I got to play in the woods behind my house and fish in the lake down the hill from my backyard...) and oh, wasn't it terrible it live in Germany as a teenager and graduate high school over there? And then, get to go to Paris for a graduation present? (You got to love the MWR!!!) :) I loved it, and I appreciate differant places, cultures, people so much more than many civilians I've met....
My dad is a ret Army Sergeant Major...I actually joined the Navy for 4 years myself, got out in '96...dad didn't retire until '98...

It is nice to meet you Darla. I wish this tribe moved faster. I hope it does so in the future. :)

Hey there Amy - totally relate - it seemed that you just started to get to know your new friends and off we go again

I look back on class pics and photo albums wondering what they're doing now and where they are?

We should have our own Reunion!

Hello there Trisha. I like to keep my friends for my entire life. However, the odd thing is that other military brats who are friends are quite often the hardest to keep track of. Many of them still move themselves around the country or world. ...as I do. Do you have that issue?

You know, I've had my best friend Angela for over 20 years...we lived two doors down from each other on Ft Lewis, and then we both moved to differant parts of Germany...but we've kept in touch the whole time...We haven't seen each other since 1993, but we email at least twice a day, and talk all the time...we are both proud brats, and take pride in that we've been able to keep our friendship going this long. Strangely enough, my ex, who was a civilian, and lived in Santa Barbara his whole life (except his short 4 year stint in the Navy) lost touch with all of his childhood friends, and never hung out with anyone he knew while growing up...and we both moved to Santa Barbara when we got out of the Navy!
