My Dad was in for 22 years.. I was born at Hahn AFB, Germany. My firsy memory of base life was Ft Clayton, Panama.. then Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota..(1st grade, 1971)Then the Air Force sent Dad to Thailand (1972) for a year,(my first time off base) Mom, my sister and I spent the year in Portland Oregon near the Grand Parents. Next thing I know, we get a telegram telling us we are moving to California..woo hoo(1973-75). Spent two and a half years at Beale AFB (home of the SR-71). Then finally, to Bitburg, Germany for 3 awesome years.( wish my Dad had re-uped for more) but a death in the family brought us home.(1979)The My Dad spent 6 months at McCord AFB in Washington St. before ret.
I tried t get in after High School, but medical stuff kept me out...damn! Anyways, Bitburg will always be in my memory as one of the best times of my life.

Re: Nice to find people who grew up like I did...
Wed, November 2, 2005 - 9:17 AMI hear ya!!! I graduated from High School in Nurnberg Germany, and I LOVED it! (well, I loved Germany, anyway....not a big fan of the DoDS)...I loved growing up all over...my dad didn't join the army until I was 2, so I felt like a Californian (we went back everytime my dad had leave) but I grew up in Californina, Georgia, Hawaii, Washington State and Germany...I enlisted in the Navy while still in Germany, and was stationed in California...meanwhile, my dad was still in teh Army and during my tour in the Navy continuted to go to Texas, Pennsylvania, and finally Ft. Leavenworth, where he retired...they moved to Missouri and stayed, and this is where I am now...
I loved being brat and am very proud of my background...i love finding other brats who feel the same way I do! :)

Thu, November 3, 2005 - 4:21 PMWe have a lot of places in common. I wonder how many others have the Germany / Panama combination. :) I am in right SoCal of my own, or rather my husband's volition.
